Excuse me while I rant first, then I will tell you what I would like……Being originally from Lancaster I have recently moved to Todmorden, and for many reasons. These are mainly, it is a beautiful valley, the people are friendly and, IT IS NOT RIDDLED WITH COMPETING SUPERMARKETS! above all, I chose this town because of its market. Lancaster used to be a wonderful market town, and, as the years have gone by, I have seen many independent businesses disappear as the big 4 take over this once beautiful shopping destination. Believe me when I tell you, that although supermarkets employ many people, as many people lose their jobs and livelihoods, if not more. When you spend money in a supermarket, yes, people are paid a wage, however, the profits are distributed elsewhere. When you spend money in an independent local shop, people are paid a wage too, but the profits made stay local, which then generates more money into the local economy. Be careful what you wish for people of Todmorden.
So what do I want in Todmorden, well, I would like to see some clothes shops, a sports shop, maybe a cultural venue, for gigs, comedy nights etc (not in a pub). I would like to see somewhere for the under 18′s to go, a pool hall maybe? Under 18′s can give us a better idea if we only asked them. I would like to see some of the empty shops filled, if only we knew who we could rent them from. I personally have been trying to find landlords of various properties which are empty, but to no avail. So it is not as if some of us haven’t been trying. I am ready to invest in this beautiful little town, employ people and help generate a positive buzz, yet so far, I have only managed to hit a brick wall. Wake up Todmorden! Do you realise you have a fantastic, amazing opportunity to kick start this brilliant little place.
